The Prom season is upon us once again, a chance for students to celebrate after their exams and arrive at their Prom in style.
It is worthwhile when booking a vehicle to make sure that it is properly licensed before you give a deposit and these vehicles may include stretch Limousines, Party Buses, Classic cars, Fire engines or even tanks.
Local councils are contacting local schools and asking them to remind parents to be careful when making a booking.
The vehicle licensing rules vary depending on the vehicles and safety can be put at risk if drivers and operators are not properly licensed. Accident insurance may not be valid and more importantly may not include injuries to passengers.
This is how the licensing rules work:
Vehicle licenses issued by the local Council are for eight passengers. They ensure drivers are licensed and have undergone a enhanced criminal record check and medical examinations.
Licensed vehicles are also required to be tested for safety and road worthiness every 6 months. Every booking must go through a licensed operator.
Vehicles, including stretch Limousines and Party Buses, that carry nine or more passengers (Public Service Vehicles) are required to have regular safety inspections and a maintenance programme to ensure they are roadworthy. Larger Limousines and Party Buses must have a Certificate Of Initial Fitness (COIF) a vehicle type approval certificate or a certificate of conformity issued under the Road Vehicles (Approval) Regulations 2009, to show it was built or adapted to PSV standards.
There is a diverse variety of unusual vehicles on the roads today, advertised for hire and some may not be licensed properly under the above schemes.
At Star Limousines, we are fully licensed by Wealden District Council for our eight passenger Limousines, including the Chrysler stretch Limousines. We also hold a PSV Operators Licence issued by the local Traffic Commissioner for our larger Limousines including the Ford Excursion Limousines and the Party Buses.
Under the Licensing Act 2003 it is an offense to supply alcohol to under 18’s, Star Limousines will only provide a soft drinks bar for all Prom Limousine hire packages and does not allow any alcohol to be brought on board.
